The Department of Criminal Justice (DCJ) at the UNIZULU strives to be the leading African university department of criminology and criminal justice, by being a truly South African university department of criminology and criminal justice of choice, that is academically excellent, innovative in research, entrepreneurial, and critically engaged with society.

The module Introduction to Criminology and Research introduces registered students to criminology and research. More specifically, the basic concepts and content of criminology, such as crime, criminal, delinquent, treatment, rehabilitation, and victim. The position of criminology, its subject matter, and its relationships with other sciences. Criminologists and criminal justice professionals are consumers of research, and as such must be able to conduct high quality research, evaluate research, and meaningfully apply said. The world we live in is rapidly changing by the second, and as a professional, the criminologist and criminal justice practitioner must be abreast (current and comprehensive) of the latest and greatest developments in crime research. This implies developing a professional career culture of actively and deliberately identifying (everyday) sources of crime research, evaluating crime research, and applying high quality crime research to predetermined objectives.

Lecturer’s expectations: As the student of 1COR111, you must conduct yourself in a professional manner to ensure that teaching and learning is conducive. This includes but not limited to, the attendance of lecturers, be always on time, submit your assignment on the due date, be present for all assessments and fully participation in class.

Roles and responsibilities of the students: You must comply with all University and lecturer’s rules and regulations. Ensure that you get information that will enable you to complete any given task. Present yourself without failure, unless the situation is beyond your control, for lectures.
